Lower Lake of the Falls

Camping & Hiking

Rustic campsites (no water or electricity) have been established at Potato River Falls (5 sites), Foster Falls (1 site), Wren Falls (1 site), Shay’s Dam (1 site), and Spider Lake (1 site). Camping is allowed at these sites or set up camp anywhere in the County Forest for up to two weeks at no charge. Everyone is always welcome to explore the entire forest on foot.

Iron County Forest Waterfalls & other points of interest

  • Potato River Falls (Falls Rd. off of Hwy 169, Gurney) – 5 campsites, pavilion, outhouse, trails with stairs to viewing platforms (ATV access via routes)
  • Wren Falls (access via Vogues Rd., Gurney)​ – 1 campsite, privy (no ATV access)
  • Foster Falls (access via Sullivan Fire Lane, Saxon) – 1 campsite, privy (no ATV access)
  • Shay’s Dam (Cty Rd G & H, Mercer) – 1 campsite (ATV access via routes)
  • Rouse Falls (Casey Sag Rd, Anderson)​ – hike to falls (no ATV access)
  • Spring Camp Falls (Island Lake Rd. or Hogsback Rd, Carey) – short hike to view falls (ATV access via Trail 13)
  • Spider Lake (Cty Rd H, Mercer) – 1 campsite, water access only (no waterfall, no ATV access)
  • Corrigan’s Lookout (Hwy 122, Upson) – .25 miles hike to rock outcrop overlooking Upson Lake to the west, the Gogebic Range to the south, and Lake Superior to the north (no ATV access)
  • Balanced Rock, North/South Vista and Iron Belt overlook – located off of Trail 6 in the Penokee Range. ATV & snowmobile access via Trail 6. ATV & snowmobile riding not recommended from Trail to overlooks (no vehicle access).
  • North Country Trail – (Throughout northwest Iron County) – Established and planned segments of the North Country Trail weave through Saxon and Gurney. Visit the North Country Trail – Heritage Chapter for maps and more information on the trail.
